I want to recount my mother's troubling experience while traveling on Amtrak recently. Initially, we contacted Amtrak to confirm her ability to travel from St. Louis to Lee Summit, Missouri. However, we discovered that Lee Summit lacked handicap-accessible boarding, leading us to opt for Union Station in Kansas City instead. This decision was influenced by an Amtrak representative's assurance that handicap accessibility assistance would be available at St. Louis and Kansas City.

Upon reaching St. Louis, my mother asked about the provision of a wheelchair and was assured that she would be assisted to the track. However, no wheelchair or similar aid was provided. As the departure time neared, she was instructed to stay visible and not use the lounge area, as she had a business class seat and needed to be easily spotted. This restriction prevented her from utilizing the lounge area.

Moreover, she was advised not to start walking ahead of other passengers and to wait. Given my mother's slow pace and reliance on a cane, coupled with her limited leg mobility, this posed a significant inconvenience. Roughly 15 minutes before departure, a staff member guided her to an elevator near the Amtrak ticketing counter, which led to a luggage cart. Due to her limited leg mobility, she was asked to fall back onto the cart and scoot herself back, a request that seemed unreasonable considering her impending hip surgery.

Upon reaching the train, despite being informed of her limited leg mobility, they attempted to have her step up onto the train. Two men ended up pushing her onto the train, during which she nearly fell between the stairs and the train. Once aboard, she sat in the business class area near a handicap seat for proximity to the bathroom. She confirmed that she could not disembark at Lee Summit, her preferred location, due to the absence of handicap accessible exits.

Upon reaching Kansas City, there was no wheelchair or ramp to assist her in disembarking. She was asked to step down the stairs, and when the staff member present was unable to assist, two bystanders helped her down. She then had to navigate a long ramp to meet her party. The conductor offered to stay with her until my sister arrived with a borrowed wheelchair from the office. However, my sister was required to leave her driver's license to retrieve my mother. The conductor then left, stating he needed to turn the train around, leaving my mother waiting on the ramp for my sister to arrive with the wheelchair.

Given this experience, I cannot recommend Amtrak to anyone with a handicap, elderly individuals, or anyone in a wheelchair. Amtrak has utterly failed to provide adequate services. When my sister went to borrow the wheelchair, the office staff stated, "You can use the wheelchair because we've just got a credit to help handicapped people." This raises serious questions about Amtrak's ability to provide handicap-friendly or accessible services. Clear ADA violation.

Gorgeous multifaceted well-maintained facility. In and out.

No clutter, no fat. Clean facility.

Everything appears streamlined to service many, while operating as though only a few.

In other words, in another way of saying, this faulty abs its personnel seem to make their service to those in transit appear fairly easy.

This of course translates to an ease to transit experience for the customer.

Bathroom facilities immaculate considering the high level of human traffic in and out. Security pretended presence appropriate and not overbearing.

This is a standardized public service facility. It sets the example.

It essentially has what it takes to properly, electively and safely service those in transit, very well.

Kudos to the on-site hot food court.

Weird, dirty , dingy station, no motion sensor doors, which is kinda important when traveling with bags. No screens showing train arrival times, there are ones for busses. People just random start lining up hoping the line is for the right train. Staff impatiently let you know there will be announcements later if you ever ask them anything. Those later Status updates by staff are infrequent if not nonexistent. It looks like the non obvious parts of the station are seldom cleaned. There are dust tumble weeds on the upper window sill. Charging ports are all in one counter area that forces you to stand next to it to charge your phone. The majestic husk of union station turned hotel is visible from the front door to remind you what a train station could be like. There is a weird train track crossing just front to exit eastward that kinda looks your supposed to be a subway ticket to use but you can just walk through. The crossing is potentially dangerous as you have to walk through actual tracks as they go around a corner.

I have never seen a station uglier than this, but it gets the job done. Needs a serious overhall, and just overall beautification, this is a disgrace to our city. The sidewalks around the station are also not maintained.

This facility is the most embarrassing thing about St. Louis. Take the train to Chicago or Kansas City to see an actual train station. The amshack in St. Louis is very shameful. It’s just insanity to not have the trains routed through St. Louis Union Station.

Seating is limited so if you’re waiting for Amtrak, expect to sit on the dirty floor or stand. Bathrooms were not clean and employees are not helpful. Upgrade the seating so it’s more comfortable and add integrated USB charging ports.
